All about Heritage Environmental Certification:

The Heritage Certification Programme provides for the environmental certification, training, and promotion of tourism-based businesses.  Together with our partner in Green Globe Certification, Heritage provides businesses with an internationally recognised and respected certification designed to meet the needs of the environmentally aware traveller.

The Heritage standard has been developed to meet the needs of Africa, while at the same time providing participating businesses with a world-class EMS.  The system is designed to empower staff within the business to implement, manage, and monitor their environmental performance in a sustainable manner and to ensure that their operational impacts on the environment, their communities and clients are minimised and avoided.

The Heritage Certification Standard comprises of thirteen sections and a total of (66) individual standards. Each standard has a set of Best Practice indicators.  By ensuring that the Best Practice Indicators (287) are addressed, the score and compliance achieved by the business will increase proportionately.

(50%-74.9%) Heritage Silver Classification in recognition for their efforts and commitment to changing the way in which they conduct their activities. This status is awarded to motivate and encourage for further compliance.

(75%-93.9%) Heritage Gold Classification is progressing to further enhance and develop its environmental programme.  This Status recognises those businesses that have complied with a higher standard of environmental awareness and commitment, and which have committed to formalised documentation along with set procedures.

(94%-100%) Heritage Platinum Classification.  Is for those members that has achieved world class standards of environmental awareness and management systems. At this level of environmental performance, the business meets and complies with ISO 14000 certification standards, thereby demonstrating exceptional environmental responsibility and an unwavering commitment to sustainable development.
